The Book of Boba Fett - Season 1

The Book of Boba Fett is predictable and sometimes feels like it's just supporting The Mandalorian. A series with good action, special effects, and a good dose of nostalgia.

Boba Fett is a Star Wars character who has quite a fan base despite limited screen time in the movies. As a huge Star Wars fan myself, I was very excited (and surprised) when Boba Fett was reintroduced in the second season of The Mandalorian. In Return of the Jedi (Star Wars: Episode VI), it seemed that he would not have survived. However, several stories were released after Return of the Jedi, including in books and comics, that showed that he might still be alive after all. In that sense, it's no surprise that a series has finally emerged centering on this popular character. Still, the focus wasn't entirely on the title character in this first season of The Book of Boba Fett.

The first season shows what has happened from the moment Boba (Temuera Morrison, Frontier) seemed to have taken his last breath, to the moment when the Mandalorian's third season will likely kick-off. The Book of Boba Fett consists of seven episodes, each with a runtime of between 38 and 59 minutes. In the first episodes, you see what Boba went through before the reintroduction in The Mandalorian, including - of course - how he got out of the Sarlacc Pit. Those moments are mixed with the present in which Boba has taken the place of Jabba the Hutt (and his successor).

The episodes with Boba were also more predictable and sometimes a bit like

Then a clear link with The Mandalorian is made and it almost seems that Boba is pushed to the background a bit. There are two episodes in which he (practically) does not appear and Mando (Pedro Pascal: Narcos) is central. For a series that is about Boba Fett, I thought that was odd. This also shows that it is actually a requirement to first watch The Mandalorian before you start The Book of Boba Fett. I thought the episodes without Boba were perhaps the best episodes of the series. The episodes with Boba were also more predictable and sometimes a bit like "fanfiction". Perhaps the title character should remain in a supporting role.

The series, like the other Star Wars series, contains a lot of nostalgic elements. For example, there are regular references to the Galactic Empire, well-known characters, locations, creatures, vehicles and robots pass by and the series mainly takes place on the famous planet Tatooine. That last point is of course nice, but since Star Wars is not averse to traveling to other planets, a planet other than Tatooine would also be refreshing. Hopefully in the upcoming Star Wars series, and there are many, they'll visit some more original locations. In the next series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, that is probably not the case, and Tatooine almost certainly plays a (important) role.

The special effects, music and action in The Book of Boba Fett are again as you can expect from a Star Wars production. They are not inferior to the movies. In addition, the consistency is also good. Boba Fett is played by the same actor who played his father Jungo Fett in Attack of the Clones (Star Wars: Episode II). Since Boba is a clone of Jungo, I think it was a good choice.

The Book of Boba Fett is an entertaining series, but not the most refreshing of the Star Wars series. Everything takes place mainly on Tatooine and a lot was predictable. In addition, the series seemed more like a subplot of The Mandalorian. The episodes without Boba were refreshing and made the series a lot stronger, something that is strange for a series that should be about Boba Fett. The action, music, consistency and of course the nostalgia were of a high level. It was also nice to see that a popular character like Boba Fett got his own series. I hope that more popular Star Wars characters will get their own series in the future. Maybe one about Darth Maul or maybe even about Rey. Anyway, I will probably continue to watch almost all Star Wars series.

Based on the above, I give The Book of Boba Fett a decent 6.5.
