The Boys - Season 3

After last season's smashing finale, Butcher's gang is once again forced to take a different approach against the demigod Homelander. Meanwhile, this season also reveals a lot about the past of some important characters.

If anything can be said about The Boys, it is that this series continues to surprise. Everything passes; from tender love between broken resistance fighters to raunchy sex with everything with a heartbeat. All this is presented with a lot of blood and also (black) humor. Anyway: the stakes for the protagonists are greater than ever this season.

Het leven is goed. Maar voor hoelang?

Hughie (Jack Quaid, Star Trek: Lower Decks) struggles to control the superhumans in a clean and legal way. His new job with the FBSA (Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs) and working with Congresswoman Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit, Timeless) give him new confidence. He and Starlight (Erin Moriarty, Jessica Jones) are closer than ever. Life is good. But for how long?

Meanwhile, Homelander (Antony Starr, American Gothic) finds it far from pleasant that he is kept under control. After his disastrous relationship with Stormfront, his popularity is lower than ever. Vought leans heavily on him because all of this is bad advertising for the company. Of course, there is money to be made!

Homelander's inflated ego and constant drive for attention and recognition can't stand this at all. His self-control is stretched to the limit. The question is not if, but when it will explode. And an angry Homelander doesn't really care about collateral damage.

Everything could be much worse. Stan Edgar, the president of Vought, is secretly busy with new plans for the company. They will have a huge impact on the influence of the superhumans. It doesn't stop there. Armed warfare will also undergo a major change.

You may wonder if Homelander will allow this. After all, he is invulnerable. But now it turns out that even he still has something to fear. A long presumed dead 'super' still has a bone to pick with various supermen. Butcher senses an opportunity to use this nearly invulnerable super to help exterminate Homelander.

This third season also succeeds in offering surprising and intense entertainment.

The shifts in power taking place this season are forcing all sides to rethink their loyalties and drive for self-preservation. One thing is certain: a lot will change for our 'boys' and The Seven. And the revealing ending of this third season makes it clear that the battle is not over yet!

This third season also succeeds in offering surprising and intense entertainment. After all, the different characters are powerful, but not without their vulnerabilities. The introduction of old and new enemies also keeps things exciting. Furthermore, the alliances are not set in stone and that regularly presents everyone with important choices. Sometimes personal interests take precedence, sometimes they have to be sacrificed for the greater good.

Per usual, all actors put their best foot forward. For example, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) reprises the role of Stan Edgar with ice-cold precision. He remains believable as a calculating, ruthless puppeteer. Antony Starr is also phenomenal again as the megalomaniac demigod Homelander. I also continue to enjoy the unlikely lovebirds Frenchie (Tomer Capone, When Heroes Fly) and Kimiko Miyashiro (Karen Fukuhara, Craig of the Creek). Oh, and never knew Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell, Ginny & Georgia) had such an endearing streak. I can go on like this for a while.

The Boys continues to become more intense. Rarely have I seen a series that shows so clearly what unbridled power can do to someone. The ethical questions that this raises are not avoided. The fact that everything is portrayed almost without restraint is a plus for me.

For sensitive souls, The Boys may be a bit too much of a good thing. In any case, I can't wait for the already announced fourth season! The Boys – season 3 gets a nice 9 from me.
