The Capture - Season 2

In the second season, The Capture has become a lot easier on the eyes. And that only improves the quality of the series.

Initially, The Capture was billed as a miniseries. One season and it would be done. I was therefore quite surprised when a second season was announced. And enthusiastic? Not quite. The first season had a lot of good ideas, but as far as I'm concerned, it fell a bit short in execution. However, the second season surprised me positively.

After completing the case from the first season, Detective Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger, The Borgias) is rewarded with a big promotion. And that includes a new, even more difficult case. A computer scientist of Chinese descent is shot dead in his home. The man turned out to be a member of a committee of inquiry into Chinese activities on British soil. This committee is critical of XANDA, a Chinese company that develops facial recognition software. The British government is considering using this software for border checks. However, when Secretary of Security Isaac Turner (Paapa Essiedu, I May Destroy You) criticizes XANDA, he becomes the target of a fierce smear campaign. Carey and her team must solve the case quickly, as it soon becomes apparent that no one is safe from the mysterious killers.

What a breath of fresh air this second season is

What a breath of fresh air this second season is. Everything that went well in season one went well in this season. And everything that could be better, was improved on. Once again an interesting form of technology is cited and an exciting thriller is written around it. In this case, cheating with security images is again a major guideline, but new interesting techniques are also used. Can you digitally reconstruct a flesh and blood human being? The Capture tries to find an answer to that question and succeeds, in my opinion. The series plays with interesting themes around technology and social issues and manages to build a tight story around them.

Story-wise, this season of The Capture has made great leaps forward. Where season one sometimes faltered a bit, the story here is incredibly strong. The creators seem to know a lot better which way they want to go with the story, and the unexpected twists also make the series incredibly exciting. What really bothered me in season one was the ending. Fortunately, this is getting another tail. Although the case was then dismissed as solved, it was clear to the viewer that not everything was right. It's nice to see that some characters still doubt the conclusion of that case. Whether the file will be picked up in the future remains to be seen. It's nice that it's still getting attention.

Paapa Esseidu steals the show this season

The actors are also doing well. Grainger is a lot better in her role and has enough leads to actually become interesting. Carey's police partner Flynn (Cavan Clerkin, The Last Kingdom) is a good sparring partner for her. I also like that Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy) has been given a bigger role this season. He's a nice actor, but his role in the first season was very, very limited, and it's cool to see more of him now. The big star this season has to be Essiedu. His character Turner has everything, a good job, a loving family and a lot of prestige. The smear campaign takes all of this away from him and then you see what kind of person he really is. Essiedu knows how to bring the layering of his character to the screen as his mask falls off extremely well.

In the second season, The Capture manages to convince. With a good dose of tension and topicality, a group of strong actors and a gripping story, season two is rock solid. Although the BBC has not yet announced whether there will be a third season, I wouldn't be surprised if it does.
