Executive producer Kenton Allen and lead actor/executive producer Noel Fielding gave a preview of what to expect when the comedy series premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 1.
“In England, Dick Turpin is as famous as Robin Hood. But we’re aware that in America, most haven’t heard of Dick Turpin,” shared Fielding during the show’s panel on Apple TCA day. “He was quite a nasty criminal, murdering criminal. So we’ve reimagined him as an inclusive pacifist. He’s a vegan, so he’s more about creativity than violence.”
The six-episode comedy adventure series follows Dick Turpin (Fielding) on a journey of absurd escapades as he becomes the reluctant leader of a gang of outlaws - and is tasked with outwitting corrupt lawman and self-styled thief Jonathan Wilde (Hugh Bonneville). are.
In this irreverent retelling, set in the 18th century, Turpin is the most famous but least obvious highwayman, whose success is largely defined by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Along with his band of lovable villains, Turpin experiences the highs and lows of his new ventures, including a run-in with celebrity, as he tries to escape the clutches of the thief-packer.
