The Flight Attendant - Season 1

An alcoholic flight attendant wakes up after a night out with a rich, handsome man with more than just a hangover.
Flight attendant Cassie Bowden (Kaley Cuoco, The Big Bang Theory) wakes up in a Bangkok hotel room next to the lifeless body of Alex Solokov (Michiel Huisman, Game of Thrones). Alex has been gruesomely murdered and lies in a pool of blood with his throat cut. Cassie has no idea what happened to the man she met as a passenger on her flight from New York to Bangkok. She went out with Alex the night before and then ended up in bed with him. However, due to the necessary alcohol consumption, Cassie can hardly remember anything. Afraid of being accused of the atrocity, she cleans up the crime scene in total panic and then runs away. In her rush to get out of the hotel room, however, she loses her identity card.

When Cassie and her colleagues land in New York City after their flight back home, they are each interrogated separately by two FBI agents. The FBI has been notified of Alex's murder after his dead body was found by a hotel cleaner. Of course, they have the necessary questions for the cabin crew since Alex was present on their flight. A nervous Cassie tries to evade interrogation, but this immediately makes her suspicious in the eyes of one of the FBI agents, Van White (Nolan Gerard Funk, Awkward). However, his colleague Kim Hammond (Merle Dandridge, Greenleaf) suspects that there is more to it. What doesn't really help Cassie is her excessive use of alcohol. Cassie drinks a lot. A lot. She is clearly an alcoholic. Everyone around her also notices this, but Cassie firmly denies this. Her alcoholism also makes it harder for Cassie to remember exactly what happened that night.

Kaley Cuoco does an excellent job as an alcoholic flight attendant

Of course, bit by bit, Cassie finds out why Alex was killed that night. She gets help from her best friend Annie (Zosia Mamet, Girls), and Annie's boyfriend Max (Deniz Akdeniz, Siren). But Alex himself also tries to find out who killed him and why, together with Cassie. In addition, Alex also tries to make Cassie realize that she has a serious alcohol problem. This probably all sounds rather strange. After all, Alex is dead. When the stress becomes too much for Cassie, however, she finds herself back in that hotel room with Alex. These scenes between Cassie and Alex are one of the best parts of The Flight Attendant. Something you can't say about the storyline around the character Megan Briscoe (Rosie Perez, Rise).

Megan is a colleague of Cassie's whom she works with during their flights abroad. The two have a rather difficult, yet friendly relationship. However, Megan turns out to have quite a big secret. As the episodes progressed, I expected Megan and Cassie's storylines to intersect. However, this did not happen to my surprise. Megan's storyline in this series has nothing to do with Cassie's main storyline. Megan's storyline is unfortunately not very interesting in itself. So this storyline could have been left out.

Kaley Cuoco plays her role as an alcoholic flight attendant very well, despite the fact that her character can sometimes come across as quite annoying. Alcoholics are not always the most likable people. Still, I'm left with the feeling that there was more to get out of the story. The Flight Attendant is based on a novel of the same name by Chris Bohjalian. I don't know if the murder mystery has been worked out in more detail and if anything has been left out for the television series. Fortunately, the reason for Cassie's craving for booze is well worked out. Although I expected more from this series and this first season does not really excel at anything, I will still watch the second season, which was also released some time ago.
