The Good Place - Season 4
The fourth season is the final season, and also serves as a fitting ending to The Good Place. Finally, all the characters receive a fitting conclusion to all the developments they've gone through during the past four seasons. After watching the final episode, I can only conclude that The Good Place has a perfect ending. I didn't expect that while watching the last season.
The fourth season continues where the third concluded. Eleanor (Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars), Chidi (William Jackson Harper, The Electric company, Tahani (Jameela Jamil), Jason (Manny Jacinto, The Romeo Section), and Michael (Ted Danson, CSI) start the experiment with which they want to show that people are capable of change, even in the afterlife. According to them, people are judged in the wrong way, and thus it is impossible to enter The Good Place.
To show this, several people are selected who are confronted with various situations. This results in - as you can expect with The Good Place - a lot of humour and solid jokes. This experiment ensures that the story comes full circle, as all of this happened in the first season as well. The big difference is that in the first season, the intention was torture. An unwanted side effect is that the torture actually turned them into better people. That is precisely what Eleanor and the group want to show with their experiment.
What I think is noticeable is that the final season doesn't just have one big storyline as is usual for most series. The last season consists of three successive storylines. The most significant part of this season focuses on the experiment, and the final episode is more of an epilogue. Until the last episode, I had the feeling that this season wasn't as good as the ones that came before. The epilogue completely changed my mind.
The final season of The Good Place is excellent. It contains solid humour, has an interesting cast and can be quite absurd at times. What I find enjoyable about the humour, is that it includes a lot of references to pop culture. Next to that, it can be quite blunt, and it isn't subtle at all. Criticism is often aimed at certain books, movies and celebrities. Besides the humour, The Good Place has a lot of depth. It deals with various topics that are central to our lives. An example would be immortality and the downsides it has.
The Good Place ended on a perfect note, and it was one of the better endings of a strong comedy series. It often made me laugh out loud and made me wonder about the more unknown things in life. The final episode was quite emotional. Even though the fourth season doesn't feel like a whole, the conclusion has a binding factor that completes the story. The Good Place is, in my opinion, one of the better comedy series.
Based on everything I will give the fourth season of The Good Place a well-deserved 8.5.
