The Last of Us - Season 1 (4K Ultra HD)

It is well known that filming successful games rarely results in a good product. The Last of Us is an exception. The transition to the small screen is phenomenal.

Many gamers are familiar with the story of the very successful first part from 2013. In 2020 it got a sequel and later a polished version of the original. For those who are not yet familiar with the story, a short introduction follows.

Broadly speaking, The Last of Us follows the game's storyline. In 2003 a pandemic breaks out that spreads rapidly. A mutated fungus suddenly appears to be able to infect humans as well. Anyone who becomes infected loses all humanity in a relatively short time. What remains is a willless and aggressive creature. Not a zombie, these creatures are very much alive. Over time, variants are also created with special properties that make them even more dangerous.

A large part of humanity will not survive the pandemic. Here and there, groups of people survive in quarantine zones. Anyone infected is eliminated. Those who are not infected can stay in the zone, but there is a great shortage of food and useful goods. The quarantine zone where the story begins is controlled with a heavy hand. Not everyone appreciates this totalitarian mini-society and groups of freedom fighters threaten the status quo.

One such group hires the tough and experienced Joel (Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian). He is given the task of smuggling a girl out of the area and taking it to another group. With her help, they hope to develop a cure for the fungal infection. Although she is only fourteen years old, Ellie (Bella Ramsey, Game of Thrones) knows how to hold her own during the sometimes gruesome journey.

The series is exciting because of the realistic approach. The fungus really exists, although people have nothing to fear from it (yet). The Cordyceps is a genus of parasitic fungi with about 600 varieties. We have used some of these fungi as medicines for centuries. There are indications that we can also use them against cancer.

There is less good news for animals (insects and other arthropods) that are infected by this fungus. They can turn into weak-willed slaves who survive until they have completed their task as a reproductive mechanism. In fact, once infected, they are doomed, but it may be a long time before they receive the kiss of death.

The game and series make grateful and clever use of these terrifying fungi. By introducing a mutated form, a very believable and gruesome variant of the zombie genre is created. Furthermore, it is certainly worth noting that The Last of Us manages to give a very human approach to the problems that ordinary people have to deal with. The world as they knew it is gone. In every field, their humanity is at stake.

This has been worked out terribly beautifully and sensitively in some episodes. So keep handkerchiefs ready. The phenomenal acting, especially that of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, provides some unforgettable moments in television land. This is another series you really need to see.

The lucky ones with a 4K television and a good surround set can choose to purchase the 4K Ultra HD box. Furthermore, the box is equipped with various languages and the most common subtitles. In addition, SDH subtitles in English, German and Italian for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The series consists of nine 60-minute episodes. On the blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD versions you will also find more than two hours of extras, consisting of 'featurettes' spread over the following titles: Controllers Down: Adapting The Last of Us; From Levels to Live Action; The Last of Us: Stranger Than Fiction; Getting to know me; The Last Debrief with Troy Baker; Inside the Episode; Is This A The Last Of US Line?
