The trailer, which was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, shows off a flood of iconic Middle-Earth environments, along with some new ones, and seems to hint at an increased focus on characters that became fan favorites during the first season - namely the Elven politician and warrior Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and the dwarven prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur), along with the series' protagonists, elven warrior Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and the demonic Sauron (Charlie Vickers).
As previously reported, one major character from the previous season will not return to the series, the healer Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi), while a beloved character from J.R.R.'s novels. Tolkien, Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear), has joined the ensemble.
The trailer also, predictably, puts a heavy emphasis on the titular rings of power that Sauron forges to control all of Middle-Earth's leaders.
“Sauron is on a roll,” co-showrunner J.D. said. Payne to the audience during the Comic-Con panel about the new season. "There are problems. There is danger. There is death and strife."
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuted in 2022 as Prime Video's most-watched series on a premiere day, resulting in more than 32 billion cumulative minutes streamed. Although the first season received mixed reviews from fans and critics, showrunners Payne and Patrick McKay promised to make the second season bigger and better than the first in every way.
The official description of season two: "In season two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without an army or an ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to regain his power to build and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-Earth to his sinister will.
Building on the epic scope and ambition of season one, the new season plunges even the most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness and challenges everyone to find their place in a world increasingly teetering on the brink of disaster to stand. Elves and dwarves, orcs and humans, wizards and Harfoots... as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fall apart, the forces of good will fight ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters most to them... . each other."
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two debuts on Thursday, August 29 on Prime Video.
