Adaptation of the novel "The Master Butchers Singing Club", by Louise Erdrich, about the lives of two German families who emigrate to the United States after World War I. Directed by Uli Edel ("R.A.F. Red Army Faction") from a script by Doris Dörrie ("Memories from Fukushima"). Young master butcher Fidelis Waldvogel promises his dying friend in a World War I trench that he will take care of his pregnant fiancée Eva. At the end of the war, he returned to his homeland and married her, but since he could not find a job, he decided to emigrate to the United States. Around the same time, Hamburg circus artist Delphine, with her alcoholic father, the clown Robert, aspire to find a better life by pursuing the American Dream.
