The Morning Show - Season 2

The aftermath of the first season is well covered, but in general the focus shifts to other themes. The Morning Show is the series of the moment with one of the best casts.

After a very strong first season, The Morning Show returns with another strong but completely different story. Of course, the second season focuses on the consequences of events from the first season, but the emphasis is no longer on #metoo. Another important theme in this season has become COVID-19. Besides the good story, the quality of the second season (just like the first season) is partly due to the insanely strong cast. The previous season also garnered multiple Emmy nominations for acting and won one as well.

The Morning Show is about a morning news program in North America. The political games, what happens behind the scenes and intrigues between colleagues are extensively discussed. The second season kicks off eight months after Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston, Friends) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon, Big Little Lies) revealed live on The Morning Show how the network's board allowed (sexual) misconduct. to happen. At that point, Alex has become a writer and Bradley is with a new co-anchor on The Morning Show. With the first episode, however, it quickly becomes clear that a lot will change.

In my opinion, The Morning Show is one of the stronger drama series at the moment.

Just like the first season, the second season consists of ten episodes, all of which are around an hour long. And those episodes are well-filled. Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell, The Office (US)) goes to Italy to flee the negative press, Bradley is confronted with family circumstances and Alex is constantly at odds with herself. In addition, Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup, Gypsy), UBA director of the news division, must ensure that no chaos breaks out and that the new streaming platform of the UBA network can be successfully launched.

Despite the fact that I thought it was another strong season, I felt that something was not right in the build-up. For example, the season started off strong, following the reveal of Bradley and Alex, but didn't really build up to the next plot twist or event in the final episodes of the season, for example. In addition, some events came across as quite abrupt and the consequences were sometimes not even addressed.

Even though I think the structure of the second season is (slightly) less good than the first season, there are still many strong points attached to it. For me, the core of the second season lies in the development of Mitch Kessler, which makes you as a spectator look at him more empathetically. In addition, the role of Bradley has gained more depth by zooming in more on the relationship with her family and her love life.

Finally, I think that Billy Crudup once again steals the show with his acting. He knows how to deliver his lyrics with such conviction and passion that you are immediately captivated every time. In my opinion, it is also completely deserved that he won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the first season. If it were up to me, he would deserve this award for the second season as well. In addition, I think that the acting performances of Steve Carell and Reese Witherspoon in particular were also very strong.

The second season of The Morning Show will take on a different focus while retaining the cast's stellar performances. Even though the build-up was a little less strong, I found the second season to be stronger emotionally. In my opinion, The Morning Show is one of the stronger drama series at the moment.

Given the above, I give the second season of The Morning Show a well-deserved 8!
