“We were very much hoping to find a new home for that one, and I think we’ve now come to the end of the road, which is disappointing, because it’s a show that we really love,”Warner Bros. TV Group chairman Channing Dungey told Deadline in an expansive interview. “I’m so proud of the three seasons that we did at Max but I don’t think there’s going to be more of College Girls.”
As reported last month at the time of HBO Max’s cancellation, WBTV was reportedly in talks with Netflix, where Kaling has a long-standing relationship, but the streamer was considered a dead end given the complexities of a potential move with rights to existing seasons tangled around the world.
In a message to fans following HBO Max’s decision to cancel season four, Noble, who at the time was still hoping College Girls would continue, addressed the lack of sitcoms on TV.
“I can’t help but mention that it feels like there are fewer and fewer comedy series every month — and we are living in an era where we need that comedy badly,” he wrote on IG back then. “So I really hope that turns around, but I will always be proud of this show for being the things that we weren’t seeing enough of: a hard comedy ensemble where ladies get the jokes.”
The Sex Lives of College Girls season three regular cast included Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Christopher Meyer, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, and Renika Williams, with new additions Gracie Lawrence and Mia Rodgers. Original cast member Reneé Rapp left after a few episodes in the final season.
