The Suspect - Season 1

Poldark is back. Not in a new season, but in the British psychological thriller The Suspect.

I, by the way, did not recognize Aidan Turner with his full beard in this series. As clinical psychologist Dr Joseph O’Loughlin, he has to come to terms with his recent Parkinson’s diagnosis. He has a loving family, good friends and colleagues, and a deal for a book about sex workers. After saving the life of a young patient who tried to jump from the 10th floor of the hospital where O’Loughlin works, he is known as a hero. What could possibly go wrong?

When the police find the body of a woman they believe to be a sex worker in a graveyard, DI Vince Ruiz and newcomer DS Riya Devi call on O’Loughlin for his expertise. The police believe the victim was forced to stab herself twenty times superficially, before a fatal 21st blow was delivered.

The first mistake O’Loughlin makes is not telling them right away that he has a very disturbed patient in his care: Bobby. Bobby is obsessed with the number 21 and is awaiting sentencing for violently assaulting a woman.

The second sign is that he sneaks back into the morgue after the police show him the body, strokes the victim’s arm and whispers to her that he is sorry. When Ruiz and Devi see him enter the room on CCTV, he tells them that he was checking for self-harm scars. They decide not to share any more information about the case with him.

This proves to be wise, as the doubts about O’Loughlin are piling up faster and faster. O’Loughlin slowly becomes a suspect. Since it is only five episodes, I will stop describing the series now. Watch for yourself.

Solid acting

Turner does a great job of portraying two possible sides of O’Loughlin: a kindly therapist for criminals, or a student of theirs for his own nefarious purposes. While the lead is well-developed, you could argue that the other characters lack depth.

It’s a show worth watching for those who enjoy complex storylines and strong performances. However, for those who prefer a faster pace and more action, the show can feel a bit slow at times.
