The Walking Dead: Dead City - Season 1

The Walking Dead: Dead City is a very nice sequel to The Walking Dead. If you don't expect too much depth or innovative storylines, this is great viewing material.

About a year ago, The Walking Dead ended after eleven seasons. However, the world overrun with zombies that was formed in this series turned out to have plenty of room for possible sequels. The Walking Dead: Dead City is the first of a series of spin-off series following main characters from The Walking Dead after the conclusion of the parent series. In Dead City, Maggie (Lauren Cohan, Whiskey Cavalier) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Grey's Anatomy) head to New York to save Maggie's son from a psychopath known only as the Croat (Željko Ivanek, Oz).

With only six episodes, Dead City has a nice compact format

Has The Walking Dead been very innovative in recent years? Absolutely not, and neither is Dead City. It does know how to distinguish itself enough from the mother series in a number of respects and it has plenty to offer. First of all, what is very nice is the small scale of the series. Where The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead have a lot of characters and try to tell countless storylines side by side, Dead City is small in design and that is a nice change. There are two main characters who have one goal and carry it out with little fuss. The short duration of this season (only six episodes) also gives it a nice compact format.

The story is nice, but not very detailed

The themes and storylines are largely similar to The Walking Dead. How far are you willing to go to survive? Are you willing to give up your humanity to protect yourself and your allies? Who can you still trust? We are now familiar with the themes and we know what is at stake. You definitely don't have to expect enormous depth or new interpretation of this premise in a way that The Last of Us did at the beginning of this year. This is all too superficial for that.

Dead City knows very well what it should do instead, and that is to provide exciting entertainment that does not always require much thought. The city of New York, with its busy streets and skyscrapers, is slightly different from the settlements in wooded areas that we know from the later seasons of The Walking Dead. The oppressive atmosphere of the first season of The Walking Dead in Atlanta resurfaces at times. The bizarre and twisted figures that have managed to make a home of this dead city also fit well with this.

Although The Walking Dead had many flaws in terms of storylines, you could not fault the actors. And let Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan be just two of the stronger protagonists. Every moment they can be seen they steal the show. We've seen their hostile relationship that turns into an alliance often enough, but thanks to Morgan and Cohan's game it doesn't get boring quickly. Željko Ivanek is also not inferior to them, the makers have given him an interesting connection with Negan that is explained in a number of surprising flashbacks.

The Walking Dead: Dead City knows very well what it can and cannot do. Renewing or deepening the zombie genre? Absolutely not. Want to tell a smooth and entertaining story? They certainly succeeded in that. The ending leaves enough room for a second season, and if done in the same compact way as the first, it could be just as fun. The fact that this series has been quite successful in my opinion also gives hope for the upcoming spin-offs Daryl Dixon and The Ones Who Live. I am looking forward to those!
