The Wheel of Time - Season 2

The Wheel of Time returns for an epic second season. It's a good time for 'high fantasy' series.

I'm a big fantasy fan. I often can't believe my luck when another good epic fantasy series comes online. Not urban fantasy, where we stay in our own world with a little magic added. No, really different worlds in which we can fully immerse ourselves. These series occur quite regularly, but often have difficulty keeping them going for a long time. Of course, they are all very expensive.

I actually believe in the Dark. I believe the only way to stop all this suffering is to stop the Wheel itself. Stop everything.

One of my favorite 'high fantasy' series (as they are called) at the moment is The Wheel of Time. The series is based on the fourteen-part book series by Robert Jordan and, very briefly, tells the story of Moiraine Damodred, a powerful Aes Sedai, who searches for 'The Dragon Reborn'. The magician who was predicted is to save the world from 'The Dark One' or break the world again, as has happened before.

We pick up where we left off in the second season. The identity of The Dragon Reborn is known, but our core group is spread across continents and this makes them vulnerable. They must find each other again to make The Dragon's prediction come true. This is while two Forsaken, evil entities and servants of The Dark One, are freed from their captivity.

The cast of The Wheel of Time is very large. The core is led by Rosamund Pike (State of the Union) and one of the most important roles is reserved for Rotterdam's Josha Stradowski (Hoogvliegers). The other main cast consists of Daniel Henney (Criminal Minds), Zoë Robins (Power Rangers), Madeleine Madden (Pine Gap), Marcus Rutherford (Bulletproof) and Dònal Finn (The Witcher). The two sparkling newcomers this season are Natasha O'Keeffe (Intergalactic) and Ceara Coveney (Young Wallander). Natasha's character in particular is a great addition and very fun to watch.

Fans of the books have their criticisms of The Wheel of Time, which is inevitable. You can never please everyone. However, I must express my compliments, because it is very clever to incorporate so much source material into the series. It is of course outdated to make a fantasy series with fourteen seasons (a book for each season). It is necessary to skip, merge, add or speed up some events. A series is an adaptation and not an identical copy. I always find it strange when people expect this.

This does not deny that the first season had its flaws. It was somewhat fragmentary and perhaps not always easy to follow. The second season completely solves these problems. The Wheel of Time is now firmly on its feet and clearly knows which direction it wants to go. The new challenges and evils our characters face are better designed and have a clearer purpose. This makes it feel like something is actually at stake. The characters are given space to be explored in depth and are deployed when they are needed. No pointless storylines just to keep a character on screen. This is refreshing and leaves you wanting more.

Amazon Prime has already renewed the series for a third season. That's fantastic news. I hope The Wheel of Time gets the chance to tell the whole story. I think the makers are aiming for about eight seasons. In any case, the rating and number of viewers look good. Moreover, Amazon not only has Prime income, but also makes its money in other areas (such as the webshop). Hopefully, that will make it easier to keep the series on the air.

From me, the second season of The Wheel of Time gets an 8.5! I can't wait for more.
