The White Lotus - Season 1

The White Lotus follows the staff and guests of a beautiful resort on the sunny, tropical island of Maui, Hawaii for a week.

The series begins with a man at the Maui airport. He's waiting for his flight back to Los Angeles. An elderly couple talks to him and the man tells them that he was on his honeymoon on the island. However, his brand new wife is nowhere to be seen. Then, as a viewer, we come to know that the body of a deceased person is brought on board the plane in a coffin. Then we go back in time for a week and see how the man, together with his wife and some other tourists, are welcomed by the staff of resort hotel The White Lotus.

The staff is led by hotel manager Armond (Murray Bartlett, Looking). Armond is an outspoken man with a big, broad smile who likes to talk to the guests. In addition to his smoothness to his guests, Armond instructs the staff in his own way how to do their job. Between Armond and one of the guests, an annoying quarrel soon arises. Shane Patton (Jake Lacy, High Fidelity) is the man who gets into trouble with him. This is also the man we met at the airport at the start of the series. The man who is here on his honeymoon with his new wife Rachel (Alexandria Daddario, Why Woman Kill). It turns out that Armond accidentally double booked the honeymoon suite. However, he lies about this to the bridal couple and tells them that they have paid for another room. Rich man's son Shane, however, disagrees. He is therefore not planning to leave it at that, despite protests from his new wife. However, Rachel's well-meaning words seem to fall on deaf ears and the battle between Shane and Armond seems to get more intense with every move.

Meanwhile, Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge, Joey) has come to the resort to scatter her late mother's ashes into the ocean. Desperately she is looking for a nice massage to relax. On her quest to relax, she meets Belinda (Natasha Rohwell, Insecure), the manager of the resort's spa area. A kind of friendship soon develops between the two ladies, but is the slightly unstable Tanya the most suitable person to build a friendship with?

It feels a bit like watching the adventures of the characters from the side, but you never really get emotionally involved

Finally, there is also the Mossbacher family that, in addition to themselves, also took the best friend of their daughter Olivia (Sydney Sweeney, Sharp Objects) on the trip. Olivia and "bestie" Paula (Brittany O'Grady, Little Voice) seem to be quite alike, but during the trip more and more cracks appear in their friendship. Son Quinn (Fred Hechinger, Pam & Tommy) doesn't seem to be really interested in anything at first and is very bored in the resort. That changes when he is more or less forced to camp on the beach for the night and comes into contact with a group of Hawaiian canoeists in the morning.

Mark and Nicole Mossbacher, the parents of Olivia and Quinn, complete the group of vacationers. Mark (Steve Zahn, The Crossing) has had a cancer test at the hospital just before his holiday because his testicles are swollen. At least, that's what he thinks. He now anxiously awaits a call from his doctor and fears the worst for himself and his family. It also soon becomes clear that not everything is perfectly fine in the marriage between Mark and Nicole. Nicole (Connie Britton, 9-1-1) seems to be more interested in her work than her family even on vacation.

The White Lotus has an excellent cast. However, it is their characters that are not all equally interesting. In some cases they can even be called quite annoying. This ensures that as a viewer you never really empathize with the characters and their storyline. It feels a bit like watching the adventures of the characters from the side, but you never really get emotionally involved. The only character who still manages to escape that dance reasonably well is Armond, who is wonderfully played by Murray Bartlett. It is not for nothing that this actor has won a Critic's Choice Television Award for his role, just like his colleague Coolidge, by the way.

The question of who exactly is the deceased person in the coffin at the beginning of the series manages to hold the attention throughout the episodes

On the other hand, the series is beautifully filmed in a great location that makes you as a viewer long for the resort in question. With that, the series still scores some points. The question of who exactly is the deceased person in the coffin at the beginning of the series also manages to hold the attention during the episodes. This keeps the series entertaining enough, especially since it only has six episodes. The White Lotus has already released a second season, which I still have to watch. Different location, different tourists, but hopefully with more interesting characters.
