Reboot of classic sixties series The Avengers in development

The iconic 1960s television series The Avengers is getting a reboot.
Sources have learned that StudioCanal, which owns the rights to The Avengers catalog, has been quietly working on a reboot for some time and a pilot has already been written. Warner Bros. Discovery production partner Wall to Wall co-produces.

The Avengers

Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, the writing team behind the hit HBO/BBC series Industry, have revived Patrick Macnee's debonair secret agent John Steed and his glamorous sidekicks. Sex Education director Ben Taylor is also a co-creator. Taylor will direct and executive produce the series.

There were rumors that the project was under consideration by HBO, but this was denied last year. It's unclear where The Avengers reboot will end up. StudioCanal declined to comment while discussions are ongoing.

The cult series launched in 1961 and ran for six seasons on ITV and later ABC in the US, where it was one of the first British series to be bought for primetime by an American network.

Macnee starred as Steed, who fought diabolical plots against the state with his trademark bowler hat and umbrella. He had a series of high-fashion assistants played by Diana Rigg and Honor Blackman. They were a breakthrough because they were Steed's equal, holding their own in fights and making playful jokes.

Known for its glamour, surrealism and often fantasy, the series became an escapist adventure for millions of viewers, combining the spy trophies of James Bond with the science fiction elements of Doctor Who (1963).

The Avengers was remade into a film in 1998 starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman. It was an infamous flop that was panned by critics and failed to meet its $60 million budget.

Since then, there have been other attempts to revive the brand. Iron Man 3 director Shane Black revealed in 2018 that he and writing partner Fred Dekker were writing a pilot for a Warner Bros. television series.

Yep, another reboot. Can't they really come up with anything original anymore? What poverty. For me, The Avengers is youth sentiment. I often found it terrifying then. I have the DVD box and also that of The New Avengers where Steed got two sidekicks, including Purdey, played by Joanna Lumley. The 98 film really wasn't good and especially didn't have the atmosphere of the series. The atmosphere was playful, but with a lot of tension and mystery. As Dave said, one of the major selling points of the series was the way the female leads were portrayed. Before that time, it was unprecedented for women to wear trousers in series and be able to punch and kick quite a bit. This selling point is no longer powerful today given all the strong women who now appear in films and series. So I'm curious how they want to set up this series in such a way that it stands out among the many, many series and films that are now being produced. Merely relying on a well-known name from an old success is no longer sufficient these days.

Unless they set it completely in the 60s I don't have to see it, actually I prefer to watch the original series again because it was great and I found it incredibly scary as a child.
