The Flash - Seizoen 2 (DVD)

Superheroes are popular at the moment. Almost every network has a show in this genre and The CW especially has a whole line-up of superheroes this season. ‘The Flash’ was the first ‘Arrow’ spin-off and is nowadays even more popular than its predecessor. Main character Barry Allen, aka The Flash, is portrayed by Grant Gustin who you might know from his role in ‘Glee’. Barry grew up a lot this season, we clearly saw him struggling with his powers and status during season one, but he’s showing his true colours way more often this time around. The big villain is named Zoom, he’ll challenge The Flash like no one has ever done before which will eventually lead to an epic battle.

While season one had a more light feel to it, it seems like season two is a lot more darker.

The Flash became a city-wide hero after we last saw him, but we soon learn that’s not all that has happened. While Barry still tries to deal with the events from the past couple of months, there’s a new evil lurking from a parallel universe. An evil speedster named Zoom decides to challenge Barry to not only rule his world (called Earth-2 in the series) but also Barry’s (Earth-1). Former Earth-2 Flash, Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears, ‘Raising The Bar’) asks for help at S.T.A.R. Labs, when he finds himself on Earth-1 after going through one of the breaches that opened during the final fight last season. As we learn more about Earth-2, we also meet the doppelgangers of some well-known characters. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker, ‘Shark’) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) for example both have doppelgangers who’ve been exposed to the particle accelerator and Dr. Harrison Well’s (Tom Cavanagh, ‘Royal Pains’) doppelganger is a successful scientist with a daughter named Jesse (Violett Beane, ‘The Leftovers’).

What personally surprised me was the new-found combination of action, drama and comedy this season. While season one had a more lighter feel to it, it seems like season two is a lot more darker. Zoom has a big part in this, he honestly frightened the life out of me (I’m not that brave, I know), and brings a whole new mystery with him about the man behind the mask. A fun fact about Zoom is that his role is being fulfilled by three actors all at once, one for his voice, one for most of his scenes in his full suit and one who eventually will reveal himself as the man behind the mask. Even though I was a big fan of season one, I really loved the depth of the story lines and characters in season two. I found myself looking for more background information more often this time around and also tried to watch new episodes as soon as they were available online. I love this genre but have never been a big comic-book reader. However, despite my lack of knowledge, I had no problem understanding the stories as they were being told.

I just loved season two of ‘The Flash’, it was the best series of 2016 if you ask me.

With Earth-2 being introduced we’ll meet a lot of new characters, but Earth-1 has some new blood for us in store too. Joe (Jesse L. Martin, ‘Law & Order’) gets a new partner named Patty Spivot (Shantel VanSanten, ‘One Tree Hill’) for example, and he and his daughter Iris (Candice Patton) get some surprising news from Iris’s long lost mother Francine (Vanessa A. Williams, ‘Soul Food’). The DVD box set offers a lot of extras, mostly focused on the CGI technology that was used to create the series. The creators put even more time in the new villains and worlds than before, which resulted in more realistic situations all around. American writer, actor and movie director Kevin Smith was asked to direct after proclaiming his huge love for the show last season. One of the DVD extras offers us viewers a glimpse in the life on set with a documentary about Smith’s time working on ‘The Flash’. Of course there’s also another cross-over episode this season which not only focusses on ‘Arrow’ but also the new series ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’, which is actually a spin-off of ‘The Flash’.

I can go on and on about this past season, but the truth of the matter is: I just loved season two of ‘The Flash’, it was the best series of 2016 if you ask me. They found a way to progress in their stories as well as their characters and sets, while still being true to the original format, only making it stronger. And with the cliff-hanger that season two ended with and a cross-over event with ‘Arrow’, ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’ and also The CW’s new gem ‘Supergirl’ (which Barry Allen makes a brief appearance in during their first season), I’m sure we’re in for much more good stuff during season three. The DVD box set is a great add to your collection if you would like to know more background information from the cast and creators. If you’re a fan of this genre, I would highly recommend season two of ‘The Flash’. I know some will probably disagree with me on this, but I personally cannot give ‘The Flash’ any grade below a 9.5 for this season. They really deserve it in my opinion.
