The end of The Walking Dead is near, sort of

For a while, it seemed as if The Walking Dead would never end. Turns out, it is. The previously announced eleventh season will be the final season of The Walking Dead.
But, it's not going to be the last we've seen of Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride (photo). AMC has decided to greenlight a spin-off featuring the two fan favourites Daryl and Carol. The yet to be named spin-off will be created by showrunner Angela Kang and Scott M. Gimple. It is expected to begin its run in 2023.

An announcement came that the delayed season finale of the tenth season will air on the 4th of October as a special. In 2021, ten extra episodes of the season will be released. The final eleventh season will have 24 episodes and will be divided over two years.

But there's more to reveal from the land of the walking dead. Next to the previously mentioned spin-off, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Fear The Walking Dead and the three movies that are still upcoming, there will be another series. An anthology series called Tales of the Walking Dead. It will be an episodic series, and it will likely focus on individual characters from the clearly expanding Deadverse.

The viewing figures went down very sharply of course. The series has passed its peak for a while. So there was a time when the end was announced. In addition, the comics have also stopped. However, here too a "universe" is created with all kinds of new series. I have yet to see if that will be a success. I haven't watched TWD for years. The Darabont season (1) has never been achieved again in terms of quality. And I was kind of done with the repetitive nature of the series (bad guy, all season to beat him, next season: badder guy, whole season to beat him, repeat). But the series has plenty of fans for whom this is probably a sad message. For them, the new series will likely be a comfort.

I was actually fed up with TWD after eight seasons, but since Rick (Andrew Lincoln) was leaving the series in Season 9, I watched it again and that season was surprisingly a big step forward. Still, I am not sorry that the series is coming to an end. At some point it is just done. It remains to be seen whether the spin-offs will be a success, but I think a lot of people just want something different than zombies. Fear the Walking Dead never reached the level and success of being TWD with its first few seasons. World Beyond only gets two seasons and is very cleverly called a limited series. Maybe the planned Rick Grimes TV movies will still get some viewers, but I think it will soon be over for the entire TWD universe. And that is not bad at all. Time for other, new series.

It's okay it's going to be over. Even if you look at the storyline of the comics. After the Whisperers there is one more big overarching storyline waiting. With the tail end of season 10 and the entire eleventh season, I think the makers have more than enough time to execute this storyline and bring everything to a good end.
