Time - Season 2

In season two, Time also manages to paint an intimate and heartbreaking portrait of prison life.

The first season of Time was a great success two years ago. Reviewers were enthusiastic and viewing figures were high. That called for a second season. But how do you make a second season of a story that has already been completed? Simple, it will be an anthology series. In season two we get a completely new story, with new characters.

In the second season, we move to a women's prison. Single mother Orla (Jodie Whittaker, Doctor Who) is sentenced to six months in prison for tampering with her electricity meter. Here she shares a cell with Abi (Tamara Lawrance, No Offence), who is in prison for life, and young drug addict Kelsey (Bella Ramsey, The Last of Us), who has recently discovered she is pregnant.

This season has three strong protagonists

Season two is also beautiful television. On the one hand for the same kinds of reasons as the first season, but on the other hand for completely different reasons. What this season shares with the first season is the great acting. The three protagonists are very strong, both individually and together. Another good actress this season is Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey), who plays a chaplain and offers prisoners the support they need. She is therefore a nice bright spot in a series full of pale and depressing events.

Still, season two of Time does several things differently. By focusing on a women's prison, other problems and themes are discussed. A theme that often returns is motherhood. This theme gives all three main characters difficulties. For example, how do you arrange for someone else to take care of your children, while you are only allowed to make one short phone call per day? And how do you, as a child, look at your mother when she is in prison? Time plays with these dilemmas and that produces heartbreaking moments, supported by strong acting.

Time plays strongly on themes such as motherhood in prison and mutual relationships between prisoners

Season two also focuses on the bond that prisoners have with each other. The first season focused on the relationship between a prisoner and a jailer, and there is a certain power balance in this that is very clear. A relationship between prisoners is a lot more equal on paper, but here too there are subtle differences. So Orla has a release to look forward to, while Kelsey knows that she will end up back in prison soon after her release because she cannot escape the drug ring. Abi has no prospect of release at all. This contrast creates an interesting dynamic between the different main characters.

Season two of Time, like the first season, is an intimate story about life in prison. But by choosing a completely different setting, other themes also emerge. And these themes are once again carried out excellently by fantastic leading actors. It is not yet known whether there will be a third season. If creator Jimmy McGovern has any more good ideas for stories about prison life, I'm really looking forward to seeing them on screen as well.
