Tulsa King - Season 1

He has been the king of action films for many years, but now he ventures for the first time in a leading role in a television series. Sylvester Stallone plays a great mob boss in Tulsa King.

When Dwight "The General" Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) is released after twenty-five years in prison, his mob boss sends him to Oklahoma to expand the business there. When he suspects him of obstruction, Dwight decides to set up his own network.

As soon as Dwight gets out of prison, he has to face his mafia family. They banish him to the city of Tulsa to earn money there. They all have no confidence that he will succeed in such a secluded town, but then they still don't know Dwight well enough after all these years. Once arrived in Tulsa, Dwight immediately appoints his taxi driver as the permanent driver. He becomes business partners with the owner of a local store. Not negotiable, by the way. He just walks in, kicks ass and tells the owner they're going to be business partners. In addition, after twenty-five years Dwight comes into contact with some new technologies such as a mobile phone. This results in some humorous moments every now and then.

As Dwight Manfredi, he still plays a violent, brutal and cold-blooded character, but he puts a very nice charismatic side to it

In the once quiet city of Tulsa, there was never anything going on. Since the arrival of Dwight, however, all sorts of things have happened. His relationship with the mafia family has cooled considerably and during the season he comes into contact with a biker gang led by Caolan Waltrip (Ritchie Coster, Happy!). Dwight has to hold his own in all areas, but also has personal problems. He is completely estranged from his daughter and doesn't even know his grandchildren. He is only too happy to fix this, but that is not without a struggle.

The absolute star of this series is Sylvester Stallone. I never thought he would be able to show another side of himself at his age, but he has certainly achieved that with this role. From the very first moment he comes into view, he shows who is really in charge in this series. Every scene he appears in, he knows how to attract attention and he is the one that matters. People familiar with his films have long known that he can portray a violent character like no other, but that was it. As Dwight Manfredi, he still plays a violent, brutal and cold-blooded character, but he has a very nice charismatic side to it.

There are also critical comments to be made. Sylvester Stallone is the figurehead of this series, but if he wouldn't be there, not much of this series will remain. Story-wise, it's a bit too small in terms of size. If you accidentally miss out on some moments, you will not feel like you actually missed those moments. There are definitely some charming conversations every now and then, that is definitely thanks to Sylvester Stallone. Apart from that, each episode seems to have that one moment where you're on the edge of your seat. These moments are also due to the character of Sylvester Stallone who then goes wild again. I mean by saying that Tulsa King is a little too dependent on the main character and it is all the more clever that he also manages to live up to it.

Tulsa King is a delicious snack and the series looks good. Nice to see that you can still shine in a series in the twilight of your career. Tulsa King was renewed for a second season after three episodes and that is more than justified. I think we can still have fun adventures with Dwight Manfredi, although the people who try to antagonize him will think very differently.
