Dramedy series Unprisoned renewed for a second season

Unprisoned, the Onyx Collective dramedy series starring Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo, has been renewed for a second season.

Additionally, Washington has extended its overall agreement with ABC Signature, the studio behind Unprisoned. UnPrisoned debuted in March as Onyx Collective's most-watched premiere on Hulu and as the first dramedy series for the brand.

Unprisoned can be seen on Hulu in the US, Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other countries.

Unprisoned

Inspired by the life of creator Tracy McMillan, Unprisoned follows a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist, social media influencer and single mother, Paige Alexander (Washington), whose life is turned upside down when her father, Edwin Alexander (Lindo), leaves the prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.

The series, whose writers' room for season two is already underway, is produced by McMillan, Yvette Lee Bowser and Washington along with Pilar Savone, through their production company Simpson Street, and Lindo. Joy Gorman Wettels and Jen Braeden also produce.

Under the new exclusive three-year television deal, Washington will produce broadcast, cable and streaming projects for ABC Signature, part of Disney Television Studios, through its Simpson Street banner, which has been with Disney Television Studios since its launch in 2016.

In addition to Unprisoned, Washington is producing the Onyx Collective via Sampson Street/ABC Signature for Hulu drama series Reasonable Doubt – now heading into season two – which she is also directing. In addition, Simpson Street produced the 2019 Emmy-nominated series Little Fires Everywhere for Hulu/ABC Signature.

Savone, executive producer of Unprisoned, Reasonable Doubt and Little Fires Everywhere, will remain at Simpson Street as EVP of production and development.

“Kerry is the gold standard for a what a multihyphenate should be— passionate, prolific and endlessly kind. She, Pilar and the Simpson Street team are incredible collaborators, and we’re so proud of our most recent Onyx Collective/Hulu series UnPrisoned and Reasonable Doubt, as well as our award-winning series Little Fires Everywhere,” said Tracy Underwood, EVP, Creative Affairs, ABC Signature. “We look forward to many more years of their unparalleled creativity and talent,”

On screen, Scandal lead actress Washington was recently seen in Netflix's The School for Good and Evil and heard in the Audible scripted podcast series The Prophecy. She will soon star in Shadow Force and Tyler Perry's WWII film 6888, both of which she is also producing.

In September 2023, Washington released her memoir Thicker Than Water, which earned her a spot on the New York Times bestseller list.
