In We Are Lairs we delve into the life of Candence Sinclair, a seventeen-year-old girl from a wealthy family. She spends her summers on a private island, but after a terrible accident she struggles to regain her memories. On my way from work to my car, I noticed a poster of the series We Are Liars. I was immediately curious about the story. And let me be honest, actress Emily Alyn Lind also caught my attention. She plays the role of Candence, and I have to say, I am always impressed by her acting. She knows how to captivate me, which makes me keep watching.
The first episode was certainly not boring. In fact, I was hooked right away. This was not because of the acting of the other actors. What I especially enjoyed experiencing is that it is still a complete mystery which way the story is going and who exactly is who. Candence's voice-over takes us back to the sunny summers on Beechwood Island, where the whole family comes together.
It's a mystery which way it goes
In my opinion, this is really a series for young people. Anyone can dive into it, but I can imagine that many teenage girls will find this fantastic. Not only because of the handsome cast, but also the trendy clothes, the beautiful locations and the exciting interactions between boys and girls make it attractive. And who doesn't want to go to a private island with grandpa and grandma every summer, where you can have so much fun with your best friends?
We start on the beach. Candence is lying there in the dark and something terrible has happened, but what? That remains a mystery, both for her and for the viewer. Candence's voice then takes us to Beechwood Island it is Summer 16. The summers are given the name of the age they are at that moment. We meet Mirren (Esther Rose McGregor), Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari). Candence, Johnny and Mirren are cousins, all Sinclairs. They come from a famous family that owns a complete private island, with several houses. Gat is not related, but has been coming every summer since he was eight with his uncle, who is a friend of Johnny's mother.
Particularly attractive for young people
The tone is quickly set because you see a bunch of spoiled rich kids who want everything, but don't really grant each other anything. Except for the Lairs, as the four are called. The four of them always have a lot of fun. The atmosphere is not that warm, because you feel that something is brewing under the surface, even though everything seems cozy and harmonious. The role of grandpa (David Morse) also quickly becomes clear, he has high standards and is clear about that.
I am very curious about the direction the series will take and what exactly happened. Because I have decided to watch further, this is more to satisfy my curiosity. Even though I am a fan of Emily Alyn Lind and David Morse, I do not find the rest of the cast that strong and convincing. But maybe that will come. I hope to know more in seven episodes.
