The spin-off should revolve around the character Uncle Fester, played in Wednesday by Fred Armisen. Discussions about the spin-off are taking place alongside preparations for season two of Wednesday, a new version of The Addams Family starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams.
The series became a ratings and pop culture phenomenon when it launched in November 2022. The horror-comedy is Netflix's most popular English-language series with 252.1 million views, nearly double the next most popular television season for a series on the streamer.
Armisen guest-starred in a first-season episode of Wednesday in a memorable role as Uncle Fester, the brother of Wednesday's father Gomez Addams (Luis Guzman), who used his ability to generate electricity to bring Thing back to life.
Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J. Ogawa, Christina Ricci and Moosa Mostafa co-starred in season one, with Catherine Zeta-Jones as Wednesday's mother Morticia.
The coming-of-age comedy comes from Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and is directed/executive produced by Tim Burton. Other executive producers include Steve Stark (Toluca Pictures), Andrew Mittman (1.21 Entertainment), Kevin Miserocchi (Tee and Charles Addams Foundation), Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman (Glickmania), Gail Berman, Tommy Harper and Kevin Lafferty.
As previously reported, season two will film in Ireland, with production tentatively set to start in late April. The first season was shot in Romania.
There's little information about where Wednesday would go thematically in season two. Gough and Millar have hinted that we might see more members of the Addams family - further expanding the universe and potentially creating new offshoots - and further explore Wednesday's relationship with her mother. Ortega, who will be a producer on season two, has indicated that the series will place more emphasis on horror than teen romance.
