Young Wallander - Season 2

The second season of Young Wallander is a decent police series, but has little to do with the original.

The second season of the Netflix series Young Wallander started in February 2022. The subtitle of this second season is Killer's Shadow. The series is about the young years of Swedish police officer Kurt Wallander (Adam Pålsson, Moscow Noir) in the police force of the large city of Malmö. After the dramatic events of the first season, he returns to the police force to investigate a fatal collision with colleague Frida Rask (Leanne Best, Cold Feet).

That fatal collision appears to be related to a case from years ago by Frida Rask, a high-profile murder of a teacher by a number of students at the time. Meanwhile, Wallander and Rask deal with a new chief, Samuel Osei (Tomiwa Edun, Bates Motel), who wants the police force to do everything according to protocol. This new chief also promotes Wallander's old partner Reza Al-Rahman (Yasen Atour, The Witcher). But the question is whether he has fully recovered from his psychological wounds from their previous case.

The series is dark and realistic and although it deals with the early years of the tormented detective Wallander, created by Henning Mankell, the series is set in contemporary Sweden. The picture that is painted of Sweden is very different from the beautiful welfare state for which that country is often praised. Themes such as immigration, extremism, poverty, drug trafficking and abuse are addressed in the series. However, the series was not shot in Sweden, but in Lithuania and except for the sixth and last episode, the sun never shines and it is always cloudy and often rainy.

Young Wallander is certainly not head and shoulders above the average detective series.

The acting is good. In addition to protagonist Adam Pålsson, Yasen Atour is also convincing as a police officer who struggles with the necessary traumas. However, for fans of the original Swedish series, or Kenneth Branagh's BBC remake, the series may be disappointing. Only in the first season is Kurt Wallander's later love for classical music announced, the references or threads to the Swedish or British predecessors are almost completely absent. This makes the series an exciting, dark and well-made detective series. But there are several of them and Young Wallander is certainly not head and shoulders above the average detective series.
