Als De Dijken Breken is a Dutch/Belgium mini-series which aired on EO and Eén. The series premiered on 5 November 2016.
The weather in the Netherlands has been stormy for days and everyone is bracing themselves. Is this the storm that occurs only once every ten thousand years? In the gloomiest scenario, it means an outright disaster for the inhabitants of the western provinces. The Dutch delta is no match for a storm surge of this magnitude. Even our country's most important flood defenses would not hold up. Millions of people face an impossible choice and must fear for their lives if the dikes break.

Amazingly good Dutch drama. First of all, I did not expect him from a channel like the EO. And that also without evangelical nonsense that is pushed through your throat. "When the Dikes Break" has become an honest and realistic disaster drama film. The storylines are the actual drama, the flood disaster as well as personal suffering. The scenes in which Rotterdam in particular is under water look astonishingly good. A huge plus for a mini series like this. But the acting level is also perfectly fine except for a few rolls. But in particular Aart Staartjes (!), Loek Peters, Frank Lammers, Susan Visser and certainly Gijs Scholten from Aschat left a very positive impression. Nice production, hats off.
Does anyone know if this is a Dutch production, or is the NPO doing this together with the Flemish broadcaster? Have seen a part of the trailer, but this seems a very expensive series for Dutch standards. Especially considering the cast.
Decent first episode. They took the time to introduce the different storylines and for Dutch standards the 'special effects' looked quite nice too. Anyway, I'm looking forward to episode 2.
The special effects cannot compete with those of many American series, but they are often overdone. Not here. Even though it looks a bit simple, it is tastefully done. The different storylines have been worked out somewhat superficially and predictably. The acting is of a good level (a bit too dramatic for my taste here and there). Very entertaining!
