Toru Acura is een 20-jarige gepensioneerde soldaat die wat door het leven dwaalt nu dat de oorlog is afgelopen. Hij ontmoet Chaika Trabant, een 14-jarige tovenares dat een doodskist draagt en volgt haar in de hoop om de betekenis van zijn leven weer te vinden. De twee reizen met Tori's geadopteerde zus, Akari, het lid van de groep dat werk heeft en dus de bron van inkomsten van Toru is.
