Only a few months ago, it looked as if 2016 would be a year of series to forget. Mediocre or worse was trumps and remakes or reboots were exactly the only thing networks and producers could come up with. Perhaps enough to keep the average viewers busy, but real series fans want more, different and better, and rightly so. Perhaps unexpected, but three months later, the better work for 2016 seems to come from downgraded heroes with all kinds of demons of their own or at least their characters who have given color to what would otherwise have become a "gray" and insignificant series year. . First there was "The Night Of", with an unforgettable John Turturro in the lead role of a drama with an ending that the viewer may or should decide exactly how it was. To be honest, I never got out of it myself and after a second look I kept having questions about guilt and innocence in my head. One to think about, but definitely worth it and without a doubt the very best that 2016 had to offer, both in terms of renditions, story and visual for the viewer who wants more. Next came a virtually unknown Logan Marshall-Green in his role as a tormented Vietnam veteran who willfully become a hit man in "Quarry". An undoubtedly very dark soul in a series that accurately depicts the "seventies" and some of its problems. And then there was "Goliath," a series whose title describes the fictional company and law firm that defends it with a cast of Oscar winners Billy Bob Thornton and William Hurt, joined by a number of well-known and lesser-known actors and actresses. Just as with "The Night Of", this drama does not reveal everything and the viewer has to fill in something about how and why certain things happen, which does not alter the fact that the three series mentioned here may well be is the one who most readily looks away. For me personally, "Goliath" is good for a silver medal for new series of 2016, after the unapproachable "The Night Of". If I can think of one downside it is this; As with "The Night Of", the story after the eight episodes that the season has been richly told and it seems unlikely that we can expect a sequel. Anyone who does not shy away from a little effort during relaxation should certainly not miss it.

A surprise, this series. I didn't expect them that well, really, but Thornton surpasses himself in the role of lawyer Billy McBride. The second season is just as good as the first, but a lot more exciting than series 1, I thought. I have yet to see the third season. For the time being the best I saw in series in 2021. All of Billy's sidekicks (and this really typifies all good series) are absolutely great. The only downside as far as I am concerned is in the 'villains', because I don't really believe in the 'bad bad guy' who is crazy and who really has nothing good in it, most bad people also have good sides. In Goliath, less attention is paid to this than in The Sopranos of Ozark, to name but two. Goliath is highly recommended for viewers who like True Detective, The Outsider or CB Strike for example.
