Last week, Netflix announced that they will come up with a shitload of new Netflix Originals next year. So in 2016 we not only have to brace ourselves for fresh seasons from old acquaintances such as House Of Cards, Narcos and Bloodline, but also for the first time shake hands with the hip-hop epic The Get Down, Marvel's son Luke Cage and the first Netflix. production of French soil, Marseille, starring Gerard Depardieu. Personally, this seems like a nice outlook. In addition to the necessary drama, Netflix will also press a few comedies out of it and I think there is still some room for improvement. If they really want to get to grips with those guys in the Abu Ghraib, then they should leave that waterboarding and standing with a raised leg on a stool for hours and just put on a few episodes of Unbearable Kimmy Schmid. My gawd, what a mess. Wet Hot American Summer, a parody of the 2001 film of the same name, seemed like a reunion for those cast members, who were already there in 2001. It felt more like looking on Facebook at photos of a party that you were not invited to yourself. Fuckers. Grace & Frankie was already a step in the right direction, but it wasn't the case that I had to put on a diaper as a precaution so as not to laugh at myself all the time. Then Master Of None ... Opinions differ somewhat about this. Well, scattered… The whole world seems to love this shaking belly comedian Aziz Ansari, but I couldn't get over the cringe-worthy acting of everyone around Aziz. His parents… Djeezzz. Even Maarten van Rossem would spit their lyrics into your living room with even more enthusiasm. With the foregoing in mind, it will not surprise you that the most recent Netflix comedy, Real Rob, was not very high on my to do list, but I watched it. On my gums. Weather. I am the product of 90's R&B and rappers who shouted that they would come and paint the White House black. So when Nick & Simon announce that they have a new record, I can listen to it in the hope that they will surprise me, but of course we have to remain realistic. The same actually also applies to Real Rob. You can watch a series with a protagonist who was the face of teeth grinders like Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo and The Hot Chick and hope that it will be screaming with laughter, but deep down you know better. Maybe I was secretly hoping that Netflix could rehabilitate Rob Schneider, as Tarantino did with John Travolta in the 90's, but that hope turned out to be vain. Actually Real Rob is just a very watery infusion from Seinfeld. You get a glimpse into the life of a stand-up comedian who uses his daily worries to make people laugh at the club in the evening. What kind of people they are who laugh at a guy like Rob is a mystery to me, but they exist. At least in the series. There is not really one big storyline, apart from Rob's life in general, unless it has to be that Rob tries to sell a script about his life at a TV network. Where have we seen that before? Exactly, Seinfeld. Perhaps Rob was inspired when he was allowed to play a small guest role at Seinfeld. Who knows. Basically, it just comes down to Rob playing Rob in Real Rob and if you don't like Rob, then Rob will not suddenly be a Rob that you like in Real Rob. www.gumstarr.com

The big difference between "Seinfeld" and "Real Rob" is not so much in the protagonists but in the setting. Jerry Seinfeld's acting performance was of such a dubious level that he even turned out poorly when playing himself. Jerry couldn't get further than producing an idiot smile when his script indicated he was saying something funny. I think this was mainly because as a "stand-up comedian" Jerry had a habit of waiting after each one-liner for his audience to laugh when he performed. A very irritating trait in my opinion and one of which "Geert Hoste" also made his trademark in Belgium, perhaps copied from Jerry. Not a rooster, however, that crowed that Jerry was a lousy actor because the entire series was carried by George, Kramer, Newman and Elaine. And that is precisely the problem of "Real Rob". Rob Schneider is also not a great actor, although slightly better than Jerry Seinfeld, but his opponents and opponents such as his wife, his best friend / assistant and his stalker are unfortunately on the same level as good old Jerry, which immediately results in success, or rather explains the lack thereof. The jokes are not always great, usually very obvious even, and on top of that, of course, you have actually seen it all somewhere and probably executed it better than is the case here.
