Testament: The Story of Moses
Testament: The Story of Moses is een Amerikaanse documentaire te zien bij Netflix. De serie ging in première op 27 maart 2024.
De levensgang van profeet Mozes werd al vaker belicht in documentairefilms, hoewel de fictieverbeeldingen (zie The Ten Commandments, 1956; Exodus: Gods and Kings, 2014) waarschijnlijk een grotere invloed hebben gehad op de wat vertroebelde Hollywoodblik die we op dit deel van de (religieuze) geschiedenis hebben. Testament: The Story of Moses stelt zich niet ten doel om dat beeld helderder te maken. Zie de opening titels, waarin de makers verkondigen dat deze driedelige reeks ‘een dramatische exploratie is van het verhaal van Mozes en de Exodus, waarin de perspectieven van theologen en historici met verschillende achtergronden zijn meegenomen'. Hun ‘bijdrage is bedoeld om de narratief rondom de profeet’ te verrijken, maar ‘mag niet worden geïnterpreteerd’ als consensus. Op zich zeggen de makers hier zelf al dat ze vanuit verschillende invalshoeken het onderwerp benaderen, om vervolgens niet tot nieuwe conclusies of inzichten te komen. Kortom: waarom zou je überhaupt naar de serie gaan kijken? Op zich is het een goede zaak dat je als maker benadrukt dat Mozes in het jodendom, het christendom en binnen de islam een belangrijke rol van betekenis speelt, maar weten kijkers die hun televisie afstemmen op deze serie dat al niet? Bovenal leunt Testament: The Story of Moses ontzaglijk op van die lelijke dramatisaties of reconstructies met B-acteurs die op sets die als het Midden-Oosten moeten ogen plechtstatige gebaren maken richting de camera terwijl bombastische muziek de kijker moet overweldigen. Dit is de overduidelijke invloed van Discovery op streamingdiensten. Infotainment is bezig aan een grote opmars. De definitie van deze term spreekt boekdelen: je denkt dat je tijdens het kijken wordt verrijkt met informatie, maar eigenlijk word je gewoon om de tuin geleid (dat heet: vermaakt).
