There are two interesting tracking shots in American Crime Story where OJ Simpson is sitting / standing with his back to us. In the beginning of the episode, he is sitting on a bed after just hearing the news of the murder of his ex-wife. By the end of the episode, he's standing above his late ex-wife's coffin. What was this man thinking when ... Was he thinking about his sins then? Did he already feel like he would get away with it? OJ Simpson is eventually acquitted of the murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend. But I think I can say that we all know what actually happened ... The People vs OJ Simpson tells the story of the OJ Simpson trial. Simpson is on trial for the murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend. Simpson is a beloved American Football player, who even had roles in movies like The Naked Gun. He is also a charming man. Such a person could never have done such a thing, could it? In the first episode, more and more evidence is found that indicates that Simpson is really the prime suspect. We see Simpson slowly unravel during this episode. His own friends begin to doubt the man. To District Attorney Marcia Clark, however, it's as clear as can be: Simpson is guilty and should be found guilty. She throws herself into the case like a pit bull. The series will show how the lawsuit went and what happened. American Crime Story is an anthology series written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewksi. They also wrote the script for From the Ashes of Tragedy. Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) serves as one of the executive producers. Like American Horror Story, this is a series that will highlight a new topic each season. So this time the OJ Simpson case was chosen. A wise choice, because From the Ashes of Tragedy is so fascinating! I was really almost stuck to the screen. You probably should have pried me free with a crowbar. This first episode is directed by Ryan Murphy. The man is often judged for his style choices, but let's be honest: this is a tightly directed episode. Murphy doesn't make it flashy anywhere. This is a case that is already so impressive that it is not necessary anywhere. Give interesting actors this material and it will be a fascinating spectacle anyway. Fortunately, Murphy's muse Sarah Paulson (Emmy winner for American Horror Story) is also present. Paulson is simply fantastic as District Attorney Marcia Clark. The grimness and determination radiates from her. It is truly a powerhouse performance. I'm pretty sure an Emmy nomination is coming up for Paulson, in which she will almost certainly have to compete with some of the Fargo actors. The rest of the cast is also performing well. Although I certainly have to get used to John Travolta (as attorney Robert Shapiro) and David Schwimmer (as attorney Robert Kardashian, yes the father of). I don't know yet if I like Travolta in this role or if I am questionable. Schwimmer (Friends) is doing better for me for the time being. Cuba Gooding Jr (Jerry Maguire) is also very nice as OJ Simpson. In any case, it is the best role in years for him. By the way, keep an eye out for Courtney B. Vance (as attorney Johnny Cochran). Vance is also very busy and impresses. As far as I am concerned, the actors put their teeth into it and it shows. The series comes across as compelling and believable, thanks in large part to the cast. From the Ashes of Tragedy aptly depicts the uncertainty that OJ was in. This is the story of a man where you really knew during the trial (and all the evidence presented) that he was guilty. The omens were, of course, very clear. I remember when the lawsuit was going on. Then, too, I saw that white Ford Bronco tearing down the Los Angeles freeways. An innocent man does not do that. A man who has nothing to hide does not do that. This case was also the talk of the town among my relatives at the time. What also becomes clear is how bad this case was in the United States at the time. Every news outlet put its teeth into it like Jaws in swimmers. A world famous star that this happens ... A beloved person who was also embraced by the white population. This was delicious. And OJ willingly lent a hand through all of his suspicious acts and the evidence that was found. So the question is how a case that seems so obvious ended in this way. How was this possible? But The People vs OJ Simpson is more than just the OJ Simpson lawsuit. It is also the gap between rich and poor. The mutual understanding between white and black in the United States. Police brutality towards blacks and the place of African Americans in American society. It's an indictment of the things celebrities get away with in America. Simply because they have more in their pocket than the less fortunate. Anyone who thought Making a Murderer, and the Steven Avery case, was the first prominent case centered on a failing justice system, is terribly wrong. The OJ Simpson case is one of the most fascinating cases ever, simply because of Simpson's public perception and the fact that he got away with it. That's the striking thing about this series: in fact, more than twenty years later, not much has changed. Then much of black America rallied behind Simpson. Simply because of how African Americans were treated. Because they thought this was another black man seriously disadvantaged by the legal system. It was another case of the Los Angeles Police Department trying to put a black man in prison. It is about injustice that happened to them and often continues to happen. That is something that many Dutch people do not understand, because the relationships between white and black are different here. It is not without reason that American Crime Story starts with images of Rodney King, who is mistreated by white agents. With images of the riots in Los Angeles after that incident. That was the state in which Los Angeles was then. There was a huge division between white and black at the time. The tension was palpable. At the moment, police brutality is still the order of the day. Many young black men are still losing their lives to trigger-happy police officers. There is still a huge gap between white and black in America. African Americans still see themselves as second-class citizens. The whole #OscarsSoWhite event is of course more than just being nominated for those golden men. It's about getting the same opportunities, possibilities and freedoms that whites have. It is also about being seen as fully fledged. American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson will also highlight these kinds of themes. That is what makes this series so relevant and topical. Based on this first episode, American Crime Story is an absolute must. The second episode also promises to be a gem, because then we see the wild chase. Then we see that white Ford Bronco tearing down the Los Angeles freeways with pepper in its ass. There is simply a lot to look forward to. This will be an extremely exciting and fascinating ride. So, all aboard people! You should not miss this roller coaster! www.meneervevie.com

I've seen the first episodes, but it doesn't appeal to me yet. And that is mainly due to the casting. Cuba Gooding does not convince me with his small physique to continue as an ex-football player. John Travolta looks like a wax figure from Madam Tussaud. And David Schwimmer's sad face still reminds me too much of his role in Friends. The story itself is fascinating, because I was in California in 1994 and experienced it there. Especially the highway chase was hot news at the time. So a feast of recognition. Just a pity about the miscasting of the actors.
