Outsiders ... People who don't belong to a certain group. The underdogs. The Farrells certainly are. This clan has its own traditions and has been separated from the mainstream society for centuries. In this way they have been able to maintain their 'ways'. But this is television ... Of course, that means there are multiple obstacles in the path of the Farrells. The Farrells are in fact on a gold mine (coal). Local businesses / the state are targeting their land. That means that the clan has to leave 'their' land. The problem is, Sheriff Wade Houghton (Thomas M. Wright, The Bridge) knows these people never will. That makes the first episode very clear. Anyway, if the business community and the state want something, you don't want anything. That means a major showdown is on the way. It is also bumblebee itself among the Farrells. Big Foster (David Morse, True Detective) thinks his time as Bren'in (the leader of the clan) has come. The current Bren'in, Lady Ray (Phyllis Somerville, Daredevil) also happens to be his mother, thinks otherwise. Big Foster wants to do things his way, while Lady Ray believes in tradition, prophecy and preserving their way of life. According to Lady Ray, the return of Asa Farrell (Joe Anderson, The Divide) has a big impact on the future of the clan. However, Big Foster does not want to know anything about Asa. So complicated times are coming for the Farrells. There is a mutual power struggle and other events that take place will only increase the pressure on the clan. The beginnings of Outsiders are certainly interesting. That has largely to do with the cast. David Morse, Ryan Hurst and Thomas M. Wright have proven in previous projects that they add something to a series. The story is also interesting, even if it is not the most original story. It is fascinating to see how these people live. How these people have been able to maintain their way of life for centuries. It is reminiscent of communities such as the Amish and Mennonites. Certainly not in terms of religion, but more because of how a group comes together and establishes their own community. And how such a group can sustain their community in the present time. The main question of Outsiders is therefore whether the way of life of the Farrell clan is sustainable. I frowned when I saw the Farrells drive into a supermarket with off-road vehicles. However mythical the customs of this clan are thought to be; nowadays it is very difficult to do this kind of stunts. It is also implied that they have done this more often. If this is the case, then at some point a heavily armed police unit would really have invaded their area. Big Foster's behavior is also quite problematic throughout the episode. He is acting like a child who now wants his little Danoont. He points the finger at others when disaster strikes, but refuses to acknowledge his own role in the event. It makes it hard to muster sympathy for the character when you know that he is the reason for malheur that the clan is now in. It also makes it difficult to watch his antics, while as a viewer you know that he is wrong. The mission of this series is to make the viewer sympathize with the way of life of this clan. That means there must be legitimate reasons for their actions. This means that they must act in the interests of their community. In that respect, Big Foster could become the problem of this series. With his actions, he will most likely just give the local authorities more reason to exterminate the Farrells. I understand that the series pits the past (Lady Ray) and the future (Big Foster) against each other, but as far as I am concerned, the series wants to get to the juicy part too quickly. Had sought dialogue first. Might have highlighted the differences between Lady Ray and Big Foster more. The latter thinks that (probably rightly so, because it is) the current time is different. But why does he want to break with tradition so abruptly? Why does it suddenly have to be different when everything has worked like this for years? So it mainly comes across as selfishness, because his motivations are not really clearly highlighted. And why aren't more clan members rebelling against Big Foster? Which is also quite unusual: just now that the clan has focused all its attention on itself, characters do things that will only cause them more problems. As a viewer you certainly wonder 'why now'? Wouldn't it be wiser to keep quiet for a while? Not everything feels organic. Clearly, some things happen for the sake of plot. That's always a shame. In every series something has to be done. The plot has to progress, but it has to be done in a logical, organic way. It always goes wrong when the viewer doubts certain choices and behaviors of characters. As a viewer you always have to understand why a certain choice is made. You don't have to agree, but you have to be able to understand it. Outsiders should therefore mainly focus on the motivations of her characters. Every series stands or falls with that. In any case, I assume that it will at least be a fascinating spectacle. The viewer who likes a power struggle, is therefore in the right place with Outsiders. Hopefully the series will be able to push the problematic aspects to the background and focus on what does work. Then this can be a very nice ride! www.meneervevie.com

A very closed community of incest victims, financing its existence with an export product that the outside world cannot get enough of. If you read it like this, you would think that Outsiders is a thirteen-part story about life in Volendam, but that is of course not the case. In Outsiders they are all called Farrell and not Smit or Veerman and instead of eel and sing-a-longs that make your eardrums bleed spontaneously, they export their home-brewed wine. Home-brewed wine, which can best be compared to the purest form of absinthe. Not because of that nice hint of anise it leaves on your tongue, but because after five sips with a sheet tied around your neck on the edge of your balcony you are screaming that you are Batman. The Farrells all live on a mountain. They are having a great time there. Spend all day in the turf hut tongues with your maternal cousin. What's not to like? Besides the Farrells, no one is actually welcome on the hill. Vozen with your very own family is not a problem, but apparently privacy is a thing. If you accidentally climb the Farrel alp after taking some wrong turns, they will just shoot you off. So are the Farrells. Nice and direct. For years the ridiculously long drive to the nearest supermarket was the family's biggest problem, and matriach Lady Ray ruled her flock in relative calm, but dark clouds gather over Utopia. The Farrells are on coals. The foundation of their idyllic existence is doing well in the stove and that makes some people greedy. People who have a brother dead to the Farrells and their free state. The family has to close ranks to suppress outside danger, but that doesn't get any easier when the legs of Lady Ray's chair are cut from an unexpected angle. After Salem and Manhattan, Outsiders is WGN's third in-house production. Salem was - to say the least - mediocre, Manhattan a pleasant surprise and based on the trailer, I also had fairly high expectations from Outsiders. After all these years, finally Sons Of Anarchy's Opie (Ryan Hurst) back on the tube a little longer, half ape people on Mad Max-like four-wheelers and a lot of vulgar violence. I was looking forward to it. Had, because Outsiders didn't quite turn out what I hoped it would be. The story is okay, but lacks momentum. Should this really have lasted thirteen episodes? Without the help of IMDb I cannot give you one character name. They are just puppets reciting their lyrics. They don't do that badly, but if you don't bond with the protagonists, their fate will be a concern too. Outsiders isn't bad, but loses out to an army of new series that are simply better. Marcella. The Five. Hap And Leonard. 11/22/63. American Crime Story. Billions. Just to name a few.

Was looking forward to the series, but the pilot really did not appeal to me. The series does have something constructive, just like the fact that with Lord of the Rings, for example, you know that there is a complete shitload of fights to come, although I don't expect them to go that way. Am I giving this a 2nd and 3rd episode? Think so, but only when there is really nothing else.
